First Aid Kit
Failure To Use Common Sense Kit. Yes, I'm talking about safety again. Sorry to be a nag, but it's important. Actually I don't sell these, but if you choose to proceed in this hobby without using common sense, you better have several of these First Aid kits on hand. Includes a card with "911" printed on it in case you forget the phone number.
Exotic Hardwood Slabs
I anticipate that this first section of exotic wood for handles will change as often as my inventory does. Since this is a natural product, every shipment I get in is different than the last. I'll always try to give you a picture from the current batch so you get a good representation of what I'm selling. Even so, there will always be some variations. The scales you receive will be lighter in color and won't look like the pictures until some sort of clear finish is applied. As a matter of fact, many times the burl wood patterns will appear hard to see until the color is darkened with a clear finish. If you're in a hurry to see what it's doing to look like, wet the scales with a spray of denatured alcohol ( a water spray would promote warping).  I cut a lot of my own scales and will always try to "book match", i.e make sure that the cut pieces are adjoining cuts so the grain is consistent and both halves match.  Scales are a little different every time I cut them but will be a minimum
3/8" thick  x 1  1/2" x 5 " unless otherwise noted
Cocobolo: heavy, oily wood that has long been the favorite of knifemakers  and pistol grip manufacturers.  Usually a dark chocolate brown to dark reddish brown with darker or lighter streaks in it. Only needs wax for a finish . Make sure your tools are sharp and that you wear a dust mask !   Pair  NCKCOCOS-PR $ 6.50
Tulipwood: Dark pink stripes in cream colored to reddish brown background. Hard, heavy and dense with a fine texture that takes a nice finish. Pair

NCKTULIP-PR $ 8.50
Lacewood: A unique reddish brown color with a "snakeskin" pattern of cream colored spots of various sizes. Very unusual in appearance.  A medium hard wood that works easily and looks great with an oil finish. Pair  NCKLACES-PR $ 5.50
Zebrawood: Light cream  in color with chocolate colored stripes. A hard, heavy wood, sometimes coarse. I recommend that this be filled and sealed for the best finish. Pair NCKZEBRS-PR $ 5.50
Purpleheart: Yes, it's purple. Hard and heavy with an extremely uniform grain. It actually starts out as a dull brown but turns  to a royal purple with exposure to air. Pair NCKPURPS-PR $ 5.50
Maple Burl: I see a huge variation in every scale I cut, even from the same block, but they are all incredibly beautiful. Varies from a cream color with swirls and eyes of rust color to a medium mottled or striped orange brown.  Expensive because of the amount of waste encountered when I cut them, but very worth every penny for a unique look. Pair NCKMABURLS-PR $ 7.50
Tiger Striped Maple: The name says it all. Very strong and stable witha beautiful striped pattern. Looks great with a natural finish and a light stain makes the contrast stand out even more. Pair NCKMAPL-TIGER-PR $ 6.50
Bloodwood. Not named for my experience with working this wood with power tools. Rich reddish brown tending towards red. Some brownish streaks that may stray into an orange color. Dense and hard. Pair NCKBLOODS-PR $ 5.50
Ebony: Very dense, very hard, very heavy.  Basically pretty black with an occassional swirl or streak streak of a lighter brown. One coat of sealer should be plenty. May be 4 1/2" long.Pair NCKEBONYS-PR $  12.00
Rosewood: A rich  dark reddish rust brown with darker brown  striations. Botanically related to Cocobolo. Often used in fine instruments like violins.  Oil finish  is nice. Pair NCKROSES-PR $ 5.50
Walnut : Rich, simple and elegant, gunstock grade black walnut.  Uniform medium to dark brown. Pair NCKWALNTS-PR $ 5.50
Please note: Many exotic hardwoods today, notably the Rosewood listed above, have had harvesting restricted under the Convention of the International Trade of Endangered Species ( CITES). Only Rosewood certified to be felled prior to 1992 can be traded or sold. NorthCoast Knives sells "recovered" Rosewood from the stumps of trees felled before that time. Yes, it costs me a little bit more, but I am still going to try to offer it at the same price as my competition.

Micarta
Micarta has always been popular for knife handles due to it's durability ( resistant to heat, cold, acids, oils, moisture, impact and alien death rays)  , ease of working in the shop and , of course, it's sleek and efficient, no-nonsense appearance. Shape and sand with the tools you already have but be careful not to stain it ( especially the Ivory ) with the buff and buffing compound.

Corian
I  have long considered Corian to be the ideal knife handle material. It's easy to work with ( use your normal woodworking tools), attractive and durable as all get out. Polishes up beautifully. Unfortunately, the gray and tan granite finishes that have been so popular do not, in my opinion, make nice looking handles. I was fortunate to find some of the discontinued solid black (Nocturne) and solid white ( Refrigrator) colors that I think are great looking. Also found a few small  pieces of a nice looking Bone color.  5" x 1 1/2" x 3/8" thick pairs

NEW! The hot and popular new handle material: Rubber! Recently shown at the 2007 Knifemakers Guild Show high impact cutting demonstration by several of the top contestants. ( They called their handles horse stall mat because that's what they were cut from. This is the same material without the parallel grooves cut into horse stall mat for water run off).   If you're going to use your knife hard, day in and day out,  this is the knife handle material to choose. Slip resistant in the cold and wet, and provides a comfortable feeling cushion that will prevent your hand from getting fatigued. I just made a fillet knife with this stuff just to try it out, and was amazed at the difference. Can be worked with your normal tools and if you use your belt sander, it has the added benefit of cleaning your belt.  Supplied as a pair of 5" x 1 1/2" x 3/8" thick
Notes: For a rubber to metal bond ( full tang knives) use epoxy, black reinforced super glue or a polyurethane glue like Gorilla Glue. For a rubber to rubber bond ( if you're gluing two pieces up for a partial tang knife) use a good, industrial strength contact cement. Want to see some ideas? Click HERE

Buffalo Horn Scales
One of the most popular handle materials, horn polishes to a nice luster with only a light buffing. As with every natural product, every piece is different and will have variances in shades and color streaks. Minor warps will happen in this material as it dries  in shipment to us but these can be easily steamed or sanded out . This is normal.

After that, finish them as you would any leather product. Oil finish such as Neatsfoot is recommended. A package of 8 is equal to about a 1" thickness.  Each is 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" x 1/8" thick and has a 1/2" x 7/32" slot.

Stabilized Gemstone Composites
Like natural stone, every piece is beautiful and different. Made of natural crushed stone and a strong resin. Makes spectacular inlays, spacers and accents. I've seen people use it for entire handles but since this stuff is reasonably brittle, I would advise caution and care. Can be worked with normal hand tools.
